Dr. Calhoun received his B.S. in Biosciences magna cum laude from the United States Air Force Academy in 1979 and his M.D. degree from the University of Iowa Medical School in 1983.  He completed his residency training at the University of Missouri in Columbia in general obstetrics & gynecology (1983-87).  Dr. Calhoun’s  training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) (1987-89) took place at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland where he had primary responsibility for several hundred high-risk pregnancies including numerous adolescent females. 

Dr. Calhoun’s current position is at West Virginia University-Charleston at Women and Children’s Hospital where he is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Vice Chair.  He routinely teaches medical students and residents and is also responsible for high risk obstetrical clinics in the resident clinics.  His practice and clinical research are a sub-specialty of obstetrics and gynecology, wherein he concentrates on those pregnancies complicated by maternal and/or fetal disease as a specialist in maternal-fetal medicine.  Dr. Calhoun has provided obstetric and gynecologic health care to thousands of women, including those who have experienced an unanticipated and undesired pregnancy.  He is responsible daily for the medical assessment and management of women with high risk pregnancies.  In his practice he routinely performs diagnostic obstetrical ultrasound, provides prenatal diagnosis counseling and obtains informed consent through a process of physician/patient dialogue.  In the course of Dr. Calhoun’s specialty medical practice, he has treated and counseled numerous women who have obtained abortions. He is also familiar with post-abortion care and the accepted standard of care for physicians obtaining informed consent for medical procedures, including surgeries which terminate a pregnancy.          

Dr. Calhoun is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.  Prior to moving to Charleston, WV in 2006, he was Clinical Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Illinois at Chicago, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, College of Medicine at Rockford, Rockford, Illinois (2003-2005), Adjunct Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (2002-2005), and Director, Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Fellowship, Madigan Army Medical Center, Tacoma, Washington (1997 – 20024.  Dr. Calhoun also holds membership in a number of medical societies including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Fellow of American College of Surgery, Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Senior member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and the Society for Gynecologic Investigation.  He is a peer reviewer for various medical journals including:  American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Military Medicine, The American Journal of Kidney Diseases, The American Journal of Managed Care, Journal of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation, Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy, and Journal of Reproductive Medicine.  Dr. Calhoun has 68 peer reviewed medical publications, 5 book chapters, 7 non peer-reviewed medical publications, and has authored one book. 

Dr. Calhoun has testified as a medical expert witness in a number of abortion-related statutory challenges as well as medical malpractice cases.
