WECARE is a non-profit organization (501(c)3) developed to offer the following services:
1) Information Dissemination. WECARE provides accurate, unbiased information in a form that is readily accessible to diverse segments of the population (individuals who have had abortions or are considering the procedure, researchers, practitioners, policy-makers, students, community groups, and any other interested parties.) Documents summarizing and analyzing the published scientific research are posted and are available free of charge on the WECARE website. In the future, WECARE will launch a journal for publication of scholarly work pertaining to reproductive loss.
2) Research Collaboration. WECARE provides a forum for collaboration among credentialed scientists in their efforts to conduct high quality research on yet unexplored facets of the topic of abortion and health. Researchers will specifically enjoy opportunities to exchange ideas/feedback, research strategies, experience, and data in order to generate high quality studies to be published in peer-reviewed journals.
3) Responses to Current Research Activities. WECARE offers current news briefs related to recently published research on abortion and health through postings on the WECARE website and via press releases. Timely responses to news stories generated by other organizations on relevant scientific publications are also posted on the WECARE site.
4) Consultation. WECARE affiliated researchers are available to provide scientifically derived consultation to individuals and organizations requesting information on the mental, physical, and relational effects of abortion. WECARE affiliated researchers regularly travel and provide presentations of their work. Several WECARE affiliated researchers are experienced and available to offer expert testimony for litigation involving abortion. WECARE posts information regarding affiliates’ academic training, areas of expertise, and contact information for interested parties.
5) Professional Development. WECARE has future plans of providing professional development opportunities for affiliated researchers. Among the possibilities are online tutorials and seminars, grant-writing and publishing workshops, and annual conferences.
6) Foster Dialogue and Encourage Media Coverage. WECARE affiliates recognize that the success of an international effort to educate women, practitioners, and the public will ultimately require a cultural shift and commitment on the part of many scientists, leaders of academic and professional organizations, and journal editors to set aside personal ideological commitments and work in concert on behalf of the millions of women who consider abortion each year and are in need of accurate information to facilitate appropriate decision-making. To achieve its dual goals of advancing knowledge and disseminating high quality information derived from rigorous experimentation, WECARE directors and affiliates are developing strategies to encourage public discussion and mainstream media coverage of research on the health implications of abortion.
